Subhumans emerge with new album
Vancouver’s The Subhumans were poster boys for the original Canadian punk scene. Though they had cartoonish nicknames — frontman Brian Goble was Wimpy Roy, drummer Ken Montgomery was Dimwit and bassist Gerry Hannah was Gerry Useless — their pointed political commentary saw them touring alongside the likes of Black Flag, leaving a trail of trashed venues and exhausted riot police in their wake. That commitment got one member in hot water: Hannah did five years behind bars for conspiring with the Squamish 5, ecologists that bombed an Ontario plant manufacturing guidance systems for cruise missiles.
