Album Review: The Proclaimers

RESTLESS SOUL
Proclaimers have come a long way
By -- Winnipeg Sun

The Proclaimers
Restless Soul
(Persevere/Universal)

There are two ways to deal with one-hit wonderdom: 1) Spend the rest of your career trying to recapture lightning in a bottle, or 2) Get over it and go about your business.

Scottish twins Craig and Charlie Reid -- aka The Proclaimers -- are going for Door No. 2.

It's been nearly 20 years and several albums since I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) put them on the map. But the Reids have come a long way since then, as their sixth disc Restless Soul reminds us.

Forget the choppy Everly Brothers folk-pop of their old days; these days, The Proclaimers play it mellower, moodier and more melodic. With its recipe of earnest blue-eyed soul and jangly '60s pop, spiced up by dashes of twangy country, light-hearted skiffle and shimmery Buddy Holly balladry, the well-crafted Restless Soul wouldn't be out of place in The Beautiful South's discography.

Granted, none of it is likely to turn them into two-hit wonders. But cuts like That's Better Now, When Love Struck You Down and The One Who Loves You Now might be a few of their greatest near-misses.
